Aight, second week of March in and surprisingly I watch a lot of stuff here! also spoiler please proceed with caution~

Anime

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto
In this episode, we learn about the background of the nonce emperor. A lot of anime-only viewers might not understand and just think he’s a creepy pedo (which he is), but he’s not a mindless, horny pedo. The reason the nonce emperor became like that was because his mother (the Empress Regnant) was abusive, which made him terrified of older women. Anyway, I feel bad for Anshi. Also, I urge you guys to pay attention to the old servant workers, there’s a hint of subtle foreshadowing.

Manga

Madara Moyou no Yoi
Asada Nemui, I am so sorry—I am not familiar with your game, but Madayoi is surprisingly more amazing than I thought! This is definitely the closest thing we’ve seen to Asada Nemui making yuri! I can feel it. There are a lot of ikejoshi in this series, and as usual, handsome old ladies! Damn, Asada-sensei really isn’t hiding it, she has an obaasan fetish, huh? The story takes a different turn than I expected, surprisingly delving into genetic modification or mutant stuff à la X-Men. Damn, I’m intrigued now. It feels like Asada Nemui wants to make Sleeping Dead Yuri.

Madan no Ichi
Nice to see Gokuraku is actually an honest asshole, and seeing him flinch at Urororo is funny, lol. Hmm, and surprise, surprise, the human-hater Majik is the country's own deity. His design is pretty nice too. Will he get acquired by Gokuraku? Perhaps we’ll see more fujobait from him👀.

Kusuriya no Hitorigoto
Just caught up to the latest chapter, and Suirei pretending to be a guy is an amazing idea because she was already handsome, but now she’s become more an ikemen. I wonder how Maomao will get rescued. And it seems like Shenmei wants to make medicine? I actually kind of guessed that the fat minister or the Shi clan guy was the culprit behind Prince Yue’s (Jinshi’s) assassination. It’s also nice to see Ah Duo pretending to be Prince Yue for double-agent purposes. God, Kusuriya really said, butch women rights.

Movie

Interstellar
I just re-watched Interstellar at my local theater because I hadn’t had the chance to watch it in a theater before (I first watched it on my computer). Watching it now, I can say it was such an amazing experience. I really think Hans Zimmer’s ost fits so well with a cinema sound system, his music truly shines here. The sound effects were amazing, and as someone who loves astronomy, I really loved this so much.

I was already impressed when I first watched it in high school, but re-watching it again, I’m still amazed at how Nolan depicts the emptiness and vastness of space. It’s scary and lonely but also beautiful. I still stand by the fact that the wormhole scene is the best scene. The family drama also wasn’t too dragged out. I understand Murphy’s frustration, being upset that her dad left her and almost thinking all of this was a sham. I still cried again at the scene where Cooper reunites with bedridden old Murphy. It still makes me cry...

Also, I forgot this film is almost 3 hours long, I didn’t feel it! Guess I was experiencing time dilation, lol. Anyway, thank you, Christopher Nolan, for such a great sci-fi movie. I hope we get more hard sci-fi films like this in the future. This is probably the only Nolan movie that actually respects women, like, I mean it. This is one of the few where a female character is actually well-written and has agency. Even though I love Nolan’s films, please, watch this if you love sci-fi!

King of New York
Watched this because it was on my backlog, and I was craving a crime/mafia movie. The movie itself isn’t bad, but I’m still puzzled because when I read the plot summary, it said it was a modern-day Robin Hood, but I don’t see that in the main character? Though I must say, I liked the way Frank White tries to be a "legitimate" guy while building his crime empire. Definitely an interesting take on 80s-90s mafia movies. The cinematography is good, though, and the visuals in this movie are great.

Misc

13th (2016)
This is a documentary film about the American prison-industrial complex, the criminal justice system, and how it intersects with racial inequality. It’s a good and interesting documentary, and it helps you understand why the American criminal system is the way it is and why racial prejudice toward Black and Brown people is so strong, always equating them with criminals.

Honestly, as a non-American, I learned a lot. It also makes so much sense why Americans are very obtuse and dislike questioning things. The reason American crime laws are so messed up is that U.S. presidents (Nixon, Reagan, and Bush) pushed the War on Drugs propaganda to fight drug abuse, which sounds good on paper, but its execution was horrible. And let’s be real, they didn’t actually mean it when they said they were fighting drugs and crime. If you pay attention to what Reagan, Nixon, and Bush did to other countries (my country was one of their victims too, hahaha), it was just a diversion.

The real problem was that these presidents weaponized fear in the name of "Law and Order". They claimed they wanted to punish criminals and drug users, but we know it was just a way to punish people of color. The system always tries to equate crime with Black and Brown people, and in reality, it ends up jailing and harming PoC disproportionately—while white people don’t get punished as harshly, even when committing the same crimes.

One of the most interesting points was when an activist talked about how a liberal politician, Michael Dukakis, supported a prison furlough program. Unfortunately, the case of Horton led to people becoming skeptical of Dukakis’ ideas to reform the prison system. This made it harder for liberals and activists to have nuanced discussions about prison reform and criminal law without being accused of being criminal apologists. That part really stuck with me because it explains so much about American political discourse & American people in general.

Like, I know not all Americans are like that, but most of the time, when I meet them, they tend to be really obtuse. If a thing is deemed "bad," they refuse to have a nuanced discussion about it and just resort to, "No, no, we can't discuss this because it’s bad, yada yada. Why are you being a Bad thing apologist?" They don’t want to challenge their beliefs or question things, and this mindset is ingrained in their public education. The documentary even talks about how one First Lady pushed the Just Say No campaign to combat drug use, which is one small example. U.S. politicians constantly weaponize fear, and people are discouraged from challenging what they were taught, because if they do, they’re labeled as sympathizers for the "bad thing."

Anyway, I ended up rambling too much, but this documentary really taught me a lot about the American justice system, especially the prison-industrial complex. It’s honestly messed up how America has an entire business and industry built around prisons! That’s the most insane thing to me because, while, like, Indonesia has a lot of crime too,but our prisons aren’t private-owned businesses. Even if there are private prisons here, it’s nowhere near as rampant as in America. Honestly, just the fact that prison and industry are in the same sentence baffles me, like, "What do you mean???"

Games

XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Okay, I’m kinda annoyed at how it gets progressively harder every time I want to play a mission. I think I’ve messed up a lot, but thankfully, not all my units are dead. That flying sectoid is annoying, though. I really want to catch more aliens, but I need more money. My god, I’m lacking funding, and I feel like I made a mistake by missing the UFO crash site mission, hrrrh.

It’s also nice to see Ah Duo pretending to be Prince Yue for double-agent purposes.

This absolutely made my day too. She's an absolute gem.
